Yinson Ghana has provided a canteen for the Apowa Methodist Basic School in the Ahanta West Municipality where Yinson has its operations Base.
The new canteen is furnished with chairs, tables, ceiling fans, and lights, and is able to accommodate up to 60 students at a time, with enough space for 10 food vendors.
Yinson Ghana Corporate Social Responsibility Coordinator Edward Mensah explained that before the provision of the canteen, students purchased their lunch from a dilapidated shed with no seating space. He added that the deteriorated roof conditions of the shed made it prone to leaking during rainy seasons, prompting vendors to seek shelter in the school’s corridors, disrupting some of the classes.
“Due to the poor conditions of the shed, most students chose to venture across the busy road in front of the school to get lunch, posing a potential danger to the students. We hope that the new canteen will help to promote healthy diets and wellbeing among the students whilst keeping them safe, enabling them to focus better on their lessons,” said Edward.
The canteen was commissioned in a ceremony on 3 August 2022 at the forecourt of the school. In attendance were the representatives from the Ghana Education Service in the Ahanta West Municipality, the superintendent minister of the school, the Very Rev. Eric Donkor, members of the local assembly, parents, head teachers, teachers, students, and representatives from Yinson.
Speaking on behalf of the Municipal Director of Education of Ahanta West, Irene Amedekar thanked Yinson for the kind gesture and said Yinson has saved the educational directorate from one of its greatest worries by providing the canteen. She called on the caterers to provide balanced meals for the children.
The Very Rev Eric Donkor, who was also chairman of the ceremony, thanked Yinson and said they are grateful for the project. He added that the canteen would help to keep the students safe from the busy road outside.
Edward Mensah also requested Parent Teacher Association (PTA) members to work with the caterers to provide nutritious and healthy food options for the students and called on the teachers to ensure that the canteen is kept clean.
This is one of many recent education-focused initiatives that Yinson has championed in the Ahanta West area, where Yinson’s operations base for FPSO John Agyekum Kufuor is located. Previous initiatives include the building of a library, provision of books for students, phonics training for teachers in the municipality, a reading and spelling bee competition, Yinson Scholar Programme and and the provision of an IT center.
