As part of our efforts to equip reading skills in pupils within our host communities, Yinson Ghana has organised a week-long phonics training for ten primary school teachers from four schools within its host communities. The communities are Apowa, Kejebril and Pretea in the Western Region of Ghana.
The training was conducted to equip the teachers with the skills to help students to read and enjoy reading.
The teachers were trained by an author, trainer, and motivational speaker Samelia Bamuah, who has written over fifty books which are sold in schools and bookshops across Ghana and West Africa.
Currently, an estimated 30% of the pupils in the four schools can read well. It is hoped that the training will help to significantly improve literacy rates up to 90% by the end of 2022.
Safia Banga a teacher, speaking on behalf of the teachers, said, “The training was very beneficial for us, as it impacts our knowledge and allows us to add value to our pupils. We will ensure that our pupils benefit from the week-long training prepared for the us.”
Yinson Ghana also presented 830 books to a library in Kejebril. The books cover subjects such as Fiction, Mathematics, Science, English, Information Technology, and others.
The books were received by Kingsley Amoah, representative of the Chief of Kejebril Nana Anghamatsia VI, Western Regional Director of the Ghana Library Authority Mr Philip Asamoah, teachers and community leaders.
