Yinson Ghana has doubled the number of scholarships provided under the Yinson Scholars Programme from 10 students to 20 students this year.

The programme was initiated in 2019 to provide financial support for students from low-income households in Yinson’s host communities near Takoradi, namely Apowa, Kejebril and Pretea in the Western Region.

Yinson supported 10 students during the first rollout of the programme in 2019, followed by a second batch of a further 10 students in 2021. This year, 20 new students have been selected, bringing the total number scholarship recipients so far to 40.

The new recipients were selected from 6 schools in the host communities in March 2022, and their school year commences in April 2022.

This year, Yinson added blankets, mosquito nets and sneakers to the list of items that students receive. These are additional to the other daily essentials that have been provided thus far to all scholarship recipients, which are a pillow, trunk, chop box, shoes, scientific calculator, provisions, mattresses, exercise books, textbooks and a school bag; as well as termly stipends. All the students will also receive financial support throughout their three years of studies in their various Senior High Schools.

The items were presented to the students at Yinson’s operation base in Kejebril. In attendance were the Chief of Kejebril, Nana Anghamatsia VI, officials from the Ghana Education Service, the scholarship recipients, parents, community members and Yinson employees.

Addressing the gathering, Nana Anghamatsia said, “Thank you Yinson for extending such a wonderful help to our people. If 20 students are sponsored by Yinson every year, we would have a hundred scholars in 5 years time.” He also encouraged all companies in Kejebril to emulate Yinson’s example.

Yinson Safety Officer Vivian Amegavi, who is also one of the first female employees onboard FPSO John Agyekum Kufuor in Ghana, congratulated the students. Speaking specifically to the female students she said, “I was once like you. I was focused and determined to be successful in life and that has brought me to the level of a Captain. I implore you to be focused as well.”

Head of Basic Schools Ahanta West Municipal Directorate of Education Daniel Payne urged all the scholarship recipients to make the best use of the opportunity given to them by taking their studies seriously and to make Yinson and their communities proud. On behalf of the Directorate of Education, he thanked Yinson for their support.

Next year, Yinson has planned for another batch of 20 students to be added to the programme.

Yinson Ghana’s Corporate Social Responsibility Coordinator Edward Mensah said, “Yinson is committed to promoting quality education and effective learning in our host communities. Yinson’s number one aim in the communities is to improve the level of education, hence the decision to increase the number of scholarship recipients.”

Yinson’s CSR efforts are aligned to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG 4), which is to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promoting lifelong learning opportunities for all.
