Yinson Ghana, in collaboration with the Ahanta West Directorate of Education, has organised the second Annual Yinson Reading and Spelling Bee Competition, themed ‘Reading: The Solid Foundation for Quality Education’. 

Held on 12 July 2023, the competition was participated by 60 students from all five educational circuits in the Municipality including Abura, Agona, Apowa, Dixcove and Ewusiejoe. Students ranging from kindergarten, lower and upper primary, through to the Junior High School (JHS) levels participated in the competition. 

Yinson provided over 100 storybooks to participating students, with the winner of each category receiving two books. Additionally, all contestants received a certificate of participation, while every participating school received an appreciation plaque.  

Yinson also announced that the winners at the JHS level, Dominic Arthur from Neka Municipal Assembly (MA) JHS and Corrie Lynn Boateng of Abura MA Basic School, would automatically qualify for the Yinson Scholars Programme if they achieve a minimum aggregate of 24 points in the Basic Education Certificate Examination, which will be held in August 2023. The Scholarship covers termly stipends, provisions, pillows, trunks, chop boxes, shoes, scientific calculators, mattresses, and textbooks among others for three years in Senior High School. 

During the competition, Yinson donated 600 books to the library in the Kejebril MA School, which the Company built in 2021. The books covered a range of subjects including Science, English, Mathematics, Information Communications Technology, Literature, and storybooks. 

Kejebril MA emerged as the overall winner of the Spelling Bee competition at the JHS level. Mrs Sarah Dick, Headmistress of Kejebril MA, pointed out that the library provided by Yinson contributed significantly to the school’s achievements in the competition. 

Yinson Ghana Corporate Social Responsibility Coordinator, Mr Edward Mensah, said that Yinson believes in unearthing the potential of the students in its host communities. He commented, “The Yinson Annual Reading and Spelling Bee Competition was initiated to help shape the thoughts of students through positive educational materials and improve vocabularies to help students achieve good grades in their examinations. I hope students will realise the importance of reading, and I encourage them to read as many books as possible.”

Mr George Effah, Municipal Director of Education, Ahanta West Directorate of Education, praised Yinson for its continuous support in the Municipality. He also emphasised the importance of reading to the students. 

Mr Daniel Payne, Basic School Coordinator, Ahanta West Directorate of Education, said the competition serves not only to inculcate the habit of reading among the students but also to prepare them for the future. 

Mrs Comfort Terkpetey, speaking on behalf of the Municipal Chief Executive, expressed appreciation to Yinson for its continuous support in education. 

Also present at the programme were Mr Lars Eik, Senior Advisor, Yinson Angola, Mr Ari Lehtonen, Senior Advisor, Yinson Ghana and Mrs Naa Opoku Agyeman, Managing Director, Yinson Ghana. 

One of Yinson’s core CSR missions is to promote quality education and effective learning for all. The Annual Yinson Reading and Spelling Bee Competition is a Municipal-wide initiative that aims to cultivate the habit of reading and improve the examination results of students in the Ahanta West Municipality.
