Yinson Production Ghana has expanded its commitment to supporting more brilliant yet underprivileged students in its host communities through the Yinson Scholar Programme. The number of scholarships provided under the Yinson Scholars Programme has increased from 20 to 25 students at the Senior High School Level in 2023.
Initiated in 2019, the Yinson Scholars Programme has been a beacon of hope for countless deserving students from low-income households in Yinson’s host communities near Takoradi, namely Apowa, Kejebril and Pretea. The Programme has now expanded to cover the entire Ahanta West Municipality of the Western Region of Ghana.
The Programme began with a modest cohort of 10 students in 2019, followed by another 10 in 2020. In 2021, Yinson expanded the reach further, welcoming an additional 20 bright minds into the scholarship programme and 20 again in 2022. This year, Yinson took its commitment to the next level by awarding scholarships to an additional 25 deserving individuals bringing the total number of scholarship recipients to 65.
The carefully selected recipients, drawn from the municipal schools in the region, received a comprehensive scholarship package, including a pillow, trunk, chop box, shoes, a scientific calculator, provisions, mattresses, exercise books, textbooks, school bags, blankets, mosquito nets; as well as termly stipends. All scholarship recipients will receive financial support throughout their three years of studies in their respective Senior High Schools. This approach aims to address the diverse needs of the students, ensuring that they have the necessary tools and support for a successful academic journey.
The packaged items were presented to the students at the Yinson’s Operation base in Kejebril, creating a vibrant atmosphere of celebration and support. In attendance were distinguished guests, including the Chief of Kejebril, Nana Angamatsia VI, officials from the Ghana Education Service, scholarship recipients, parents, community members, and Yinson employees.
Nana Angamatsia (VI) chief of Kejebril, who deeply appreciates the company’s efforts to impact the community, in an address expressed his heartfelt gratitude and commended the company’s unwavering dedication to continual improvement of lives and education through its scholarship programme.
Also, Mr. Daniel Payne, Basic School Coordinator of the Ghana Education Service in the Ahanta West Municipality in a brief advice to the students, urged them to tackle their academics with utmost urgency and refrain from negative peer influences in school.
Mr Cletus Ato Cobbinah, a scholarship recipient, expressed his heartfelt gratitude “ My elder brother was unable to continue his education because there was no money even though he passed with excellence. I am profoundly grateful to have received this scholarship because, without it, I would have suffered a similar fate.”
A principal from one of the schools in the area, Madam Sarah Gyimah Dick also encouraged the recipients to study hard to make both their parents and the company proud.
Yinson’s corporate social responsibility initiatives are in harmony with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG 4), which focuses on guaranteeing accessible and fair high-quality education and fostering lifelong learning opportunities for everyone.
