Yinson Miri recently sponsored and participated in a ghost net hunting operation at Barracuda Point, a dive site within Miri-Sibuti Coral Reefs National Park, Miri. Together with volunteer divers from Borneo Ghost Hunters and Miri Divers, 51kg worth of ghost nets were removed. This is the third year Yinson Miri has sponsored this activity.

The team retrieved ghost nets from two separate dive sites within Barracuda Point at depths of between 22 to 26 metres. Visibility was reported to be at 10m, with generally slow currents. About 30m of ghost nets were retrieved from each site.

Yinson Miri Operations Manager Bogdan Lefter said, “This activity has become a tradition of sorts for the Miri office, and we look forward to continuing our efforts that contribute to the conservation and sustainable use of our oceans.”

Ghost nets are fishing nets that have been abandoned, lost or discarded at sea, and can significantly damage marine life and coral reefs. The conservation effort is in line with Yinson’s commitment to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal 14 (SDG14), Life Below Water.
