Yinson Ghana has provided an off-grid rooftop solar system for the Pretea Municipal Assembly (“MA”) Basic School in Ahanta West, allowing its 312 students to benefit from a more conducive and comfortable learning environment.

The 5KW system is designed to provide uninterrupted power for lighting, a television set, fans, a refrigerator and laptops without the support of the national grid. The system will run the appliances directly from the solar energy generated, and store excess energy in batteries for use during the night and on cloudy days.

The school, which is near Yinson’s operation base in Kejabril in the Western Region, is not currently connected to the national grid.

Yinson also provided each of the school’s 12 classrooms with lights and ceiling fans, washroom lights, and 20 security lights for the perimeter. Additionally, Yinson also supplied a refrigerator and fire extinguishers for each of the three classroom blocks.

The solar energy system was officially commissioned during a ceremony held at the school on March 4, 2021. The ceremony, which was officiated by Solomon Ledi, a leader in the community. Joining in the event were Mr. Mark Adoba Adatekey, Municipal Director of Education (Ahanta West) , Daniel Payne, Public Relations Officer of Ahanata West Munical Education Office, Nana Kofi Nyarkom, Chief of Pretea, Togbe  Duho (1) Chief of Awunokrom, Timothy Ampem, Assemblyman of the Kejebril Electoral Area and teachers and students of the school, and the media.

Mr Mark Adoba Adatekey, the Municipal Director of Education who officially opened the system, said education is everybody’s business and therefore lauded Yinson for its support over the period.

He urged the school to maximize the use of solar energy to enhance Information Communications Technology (“ICT”) and science education in the municipal area.

Nana Kofi Nyankom, Chief of Pretea also noted how benevolent the company had been in improving education in the Kejabril area and its surrounding environment.

The school’s need for a power supply came to light in 2019 when Yinson was looking for schools in the local area to which the Group could donate laptops.

“When we realised that the Pretea MA Basic School did not even have a power supply, we shifted our focus towards helping with this essential need,” said Yinson Ghana’s CSR Coordinator, Edward Mensah.

“The students can now use the classrooms for evening classes, and we hope that the ceiling fans will provide comfort in the classrooms for both students and teachers,” he added.

This initiative aligns with Yinson’s CSR mission of promoting quality education, and our Group-wide focus on contributing to the global transition towards a sustainable energy system.
