Yinson’s Ghana office recently collaborated with local community leaders to provide an Information Community Technology (ICT) Centre at the Kejabil Municipal Assembly (MA) Junior High School (JHS). The centre, which is near Yinson’s operation base in Kejabil in the Western Region, will serve students in four schools in Kejabil and surrounding communities.

Yinson provided 18 desk top computers, a printer, a projector, a projection screen, a server, ceiling fans, an air conditioner, UPS units, cables and other computer accessories to the ICT centre, which was renovated by community leaders in Kejabil. Yinson’s IT specialist will also hold regular seminars with the IT instructors of the four schools to help them improve their skills in the subject.

The center was inaugurated in a ceremony at the forecourt of the Kejabil MA JHS. In attendance were the chiefs/ queen mothers and elders of the communities, representative of the Municipal Director of Education, Mrs. Hellen Yalley; Public Relations Officer of the Municipal Directorate of Education, Mr. Daniel Payne; representative of the Petroleum Commission, Mr Kwesi Essel; representatives of the Member of Parliament of Ahanta West Municipality, community members, representatives of Yinson and selected students from the four schools.

In an address to the gathering, Queen Mother of Kejabil, Obaahema Nana Ebum II thanked Yinson for the gesture and advised the students to make good use of the center. Her sentiments were echoed by Daniel Payne, who emphasised the importance of ICT and pointed out that it is an essential part of the standard based curriculum set by the Ministry of Education. In his speech, Mr Kwesi Essel advised the community to develop a security plan to protect the IT equipment.

Yinson Ghana’s CSR coordinator Mr Edward Mensah said that although ICT was part of the standard curriculum in Junior High Schools, none of the schools in the communities have computers for lessons.

“This initiative aims to improve the ICT skills of the students and enable them to understand the subject. This is in line with Yinson’s CSR mission of promoting quality education and effective learning in the communities where we operate,” he said.

The centre will be managed and maintained by a joint committee comprising Kejabil community members and the teachers of the four schools.
