Yinson recently volunteered at the Gibbon Conservation Society (GCS), a non-profit organisation working to conserve, protect and rehabilitate endangered gibbons and other primate species in Raub, Pahang, Malaysia. The Group also donated fresh produce and sponsored a 4-door chiller to preserve the freshness of the gibbons’ food.

The volunteering team of 21 Yinson employees was first briefed on GCS’ comprehensive approach to wildlife conservation and their goal of releasing rehabilitated gibbons back into the wild with post-release monitoring, which was led by Mariani Ramli, President and Founder of GCS.

With the gibbons’ songs providing a natural soundtrack to the morning, Yinsonites also engaged in building various enrichment puzzles designed to enhance the gibbons’ lives. The team crafted toys to improve their foraging skills and made treats to stimulate their curiosity about food. Additionally, they planted plants in bamboo pots using a special soil mixture enriched with gibbon feces to boost fertilisation.

“We are thrilled to receive Yinson’s support for gibbon rehabilitation, a cause that often gets overlooked in favour of more well-known species. Yinson’s commitment is truly inspiring, and we are especially grateful that the team visited our project site at Malaya GReP to learn firsthand about our work. We hope other companies will follow Yinson’s lead in supporting critical but under-appreciated conservation work, such as protecting Malaysia’s endangered gibbons and restoring their natural habitats,” said Mariani.

As the only small apes, gibbons are commonly assumed to be monkeys. However, similar to large apes, gibbons share 96% of DNA with humans. Their most unique trait is singing to mark territories and find mates. They also use vocalisation to communicate with each other, which unfortunately makes them an easier target for illegal wildlife trading.

Rehabilitation for gibbons is crucial as it significantly enhances their chances of survival when reintroduced into the wild. By providing a safe environment where they can recover from injuries, malnutrition, or trauma, and learn essential survival skills, rehabilitation programs help gibbons regain their natural behaviors. This process ensures they are better equipped to find food, avoid predators, and integrate into wild populations, ultimately contributing to the conservation of their species and the biodiversity of their habitats.

Dr Renard Siew, Yinson Head of Corporate Sustainability commented, “Gibbons are nature’s acrobats and soulful singers, reminding us how vibrant and interconnected life truly is. Protecting them isn’t just about saving a species—it’s about preserving the rhythm of the forest. At Yinson, we believe we have a role to play in protecting our rich biodiversity and turn conservation into action, ensuring these incredible creatures thrive and inspire our future generations. “

Yinson is proud to support GCS and looks forward to continuing this partnership to make a significant impact on wildlife conservation.
